Russian-backed separatist forces increase number of attacks
One Ukrainian soldier has been killed and two were injured as a result of the armed hostilities in past 24 hours, according to the press center of the Anti-Terrorist Operation (ATO) Headquarters.
"Over the past day, one Ukrainian serviceman was killed, and two other were injured as a result of combat activity. Ukrainian army has suffered these losses in the Donetsk direction during the attacks. We convey our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased soldier," Lysenko said.
According to him, on July 1, five Russian-backed militants were killed and seven others were injured. They were members of the so-called 9th and 11th regiment, and of the 3rd, 4th and 7th brigade. Lysenko added it was the militants' 9th Separate Assault Mechanized Regiment Marines that have suffered the greatest losses. The separatist fighters of the 9th regiment are deployed in Novoazovsk and conduct attacks on Ukrainian troops in the Mariupol direction, Ukraine's military spokesman said.
The most extensive firefights between the Ukrainian army and the Russian-backed militants started after 6 p.m. on July 1.
"The enemy conducted artillery shelling near Luhanske in the Donetsk direction. They also used mortars across the contact line. The fight has intensified significantly after 6 p.m. The extensive firefights between the Ukrainian army and the enemy took place across the whole contact line – starting with Zaytseve and moving towards Avdivka's ‘industrial zone'," Lysenko informed.
Over the last day, in 12 out of 28 militant attacks heavy weapons were used, according to Ukraine's military spokesman.
