Poroshenko confers name of Yuriy Olefirenko to Kirovohrad ship (photos)

President praised heroic efforts of Ukrainian military sailors

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has conferred the name of Yuriy Olefirenko to Kirovohrad amphibious assault ship, the president's press service reports.

According to the Decree, this decision was made taking into account Olefirenko's special merits to the Homeland and exemplary performance of training and combat missions by the crew of the ship, the report reads.

"Unbroken spirit, courage and professionalism of naval special forces demonstrated in the defense of Donbas are an example of exceptional military glory and honor," Poroshenko said during festivities in Odesa on the occasion of the Day of Naval Forces.

"Defending Donbas and its maritime pearl – Mariupol, military sailors inscribed a lot of heroic pages to the history of the Ukrainian state," he said in the course of his speech.

Poroshenko expressed firm belief that the fallen hero – commander of the naval special center Yuriy Olefirenko deserves to be honoured and his name will appear on the board of the amphibious assault ship.
