Turkish coast guard intercepts dozens of migrants at sea

EU-Turkey deal to return rejected asylum seekers now in effect

The Turkish coast guard intercepted dozens of migrants trying to sail to the Greek Island of Lesbos on Monday (April 4).

Greece has now began returning rejected asylum seekers to Turkey under a landmark European Union deal aimed at stopping the uncontrollable influx of migrants and refugees into Europe since last year. Turkey is home to more than 2.7 million Syrian refugees alone.

Under the EU-Turkey deal, Ankara will take back all migrants and refugees who enter Greece illegally. in return the EU taking in thousands of Syrian refugees directly from Turkey and rewarding it with money, early visa-free travel and progress in its EU membership negotiations.
