Three checkpoints at Ukrainian-Polish border are reportedly unblocked
UPDATE: Assistant chairman of the State Border Service Oleh Slobodyan writes on Facebook:
"We managed to get the situation sorted out at the checkpoint Krakovets. The road leading to the checkpoint is unblocked. Thus, all the checkpoints on the Ukrainian-Polish border are operating in the normal way"...
STORY: The authorities unblocked checkpoints Shegyni and Rava-Ruska at the Ukrainian-Polish border, while the checkpoint Krakovets still remains blocked.
This was reported by assistant chairman of the State Border Service Oleh Slobodyan on Facebook.
"Regarding the blocking of checkpoints on the Ukrainian-Polish border... Thanks to the joint efforts of the border guards, last night (July 4) local authorities and the National Police managed to unlock the checkpoints Shegyni and Rava-Ruska. The checkppoint Krakovets remains blocked", writes Oleh Slobodyan.
He also expressed the hope that a positive progress will not have retroactive effect, and added that work among locals is underway.
Starting from July 4 Poland suspended small border traffic with Ukraine, the measure will stay in force for less than a month. The State Border Service of Ukraine warned, that from July 4 till August 2 the residents of border areas of Ukraine would be able to cross into Polish territory only according to the standard procedure, i.e. having international passport and visa.
Poland's Foreign Ministry says the suspension of small border traffic is due to the upcoming NATO summit, which will take place in Warsaw on 8-9 at the presidential level, as well as the events related to the World Youth Day in Krakow, when the Polish city expects around 2.5 million visitors.
Local residents reacted to this decision and blocked three checkpoints. Small border traffic suspension at the Ukrainian-Polish border resulted in clashes betweeen Ukrainian petty smugglers and Polish border guards. On July 4, protesters blocked the car of the Polish consul at the checkpoint Rava-Ruska.
