Ukraine celebrates Day of Airborne forces (photos, video)

Paratroopers change the way to mark their professional holiday because of armed conflict in eastern part of the country

Nobody but us! This is the motto of Ukrainian airborne troops. They celebrate professional holiday on August 2. Currently five airmobile brigades are protecting the country. Seven paratroopers have the top honor – Hero of Ukraine.

The Day of Airborne Forces was established in 1999. Earlier paratroopers marked their day with fist fighting and jumping into fountains. Lately the holiday turned into Remembrance Day. During the two years of the armed conflict in eastern Ukraine 415 airborne troops sacrificed their lives. 31 soldier has gone missing.

Paratroopers do not wear their distinctive striped vests often, because the enemy should not know who is fighting them.

At war, airborne troops do not need triumphant parades or ceremonial greetings. The best gifts would be silence and deep sleep.

The paratroopers who take part in celebration have all their thoughts with their sworn brothers at the frontline.

Still, celebrating – is a good occasion to show the beauty of their uniform.

To mark their holiday, some paratroopers go 4 kilometers up. They are going to jump out of a helicopter. Today they choose the sail wing instead of usual white round parachute. It is more complicated and interesting, airborne troopers say.
