Ukraine marks Navy Day

Southern port of Odesa is this year's centre of celebration

On the first Sunday of July Ukraine celebrates Navy Day with warships parade and greetings from top officials.

President Petro Poroshenko has thanked the Navy personnel for their actions during 2014 Crimea annexation. "You have become the force uniting the patriots and crushing the aggressor's plan to destabilise and seize the southern regions of our country," the presidential press service has quoted him as saying.

Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman has stated Ukraine as a naval state mus do everything possible to provide its military fleet with modern equipment.

Defence Minister Stepan Poltorak participated in the ceremony in Odesa and congratulated the military on their professional holiday.

Fifteen combat ships, boats and vessels have taken part in the events on the occasion of the Day of the Ukrainian Navy.
