Photojournalist had a closer look at the work of the new law enforcement structure
This year Ministry of Interior presented its new police structure – Water Patrol. Such units have already been started in few Ukrainian cities, positioned on the biggest river of the country – the Dnieper. Police patrols of this kind were deployed in Cherkasy, Kyiv, Dnipro and Kherson during spring and summer.
The first police boat in Kyiv region was launched in Vyshhorod by local police training center a month ago. Quick response groups of Police Patrol on the Water started to fulfill their duties in the Kyiv Reservoir (popular name – Kyiv Sea) and surrounding rivers of metropolitan region.
First to join water policemen on their patrol was the head of the National Police Khatia Dekanoidze, who visited the Vyshhorod police training center. Last week Ukraine Today photojournalist followed the same path.
He joined the patrol of the same boat – the first one in the Kyiv region. It's a vessel built especially for police duties.
Our Journalist was welcomed by the patrol unit, consisting of Staff Sergeants Oleh Marchenko and Oleksandr Ovsiyenko, and First Lieutenant Ihor Heza.
Water patrol itself continues the reform of Soviet-era "militia" in Ukraine into modern law enforcement and public service structure.
Water police is a part of most innovative structure of Interior Ministry units – Patrol Service. The main task of Water Police – monitoring the application of rules of stay on the rivers and the fight against poaching.
Water policemen wear the same uniform as Patrol Police with new insignia.
Normal patrol time for each team – 12 hours.
This check on Kyiv Sea was rather calm ending without any incident. Policemen met only a pair of fishermen and checked their documents and equipment.
They had almost everything needed for legal fishing, so the patrol only needed to instructed them what to have next time to avoid any trouble.
But this day was an easy day, an exception to the rule. For example, one day Dnipro city Water Police reported checking 62 boats, 13 suspects and confiscating 5 banned fishing gears only during last weekend. A diverse part of their job is checking the pillars and structure of all the bridges.
Today Vyshhorod training center has trainied the first 250 water police officers, who will form the basis of an increasing new service.
