World Youth Day celebration starts in Poland

Pope Francis will meet youth from all over the world and deliver a mass

The event lasts in Krakow until July 31. It is a worldwide encounter with the Pope. World Youth Day is celebrated every three years in a different country.

Last time it took place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

WYD is aimed to gather Christian youth, get together and deepen their faith. During the week of World Youth Day, there will be prayers and the sacraments, events with Pope Francis and cultural agenda.

More than half a million people from 187 countries have registered to take part in the event. The registration is still open. The organizers expect for up to 2 million visitors. At least 5 thousand – are coming from Ukraine. 2016 will be the first year when organizers will provide an official translation of the event in the Ukrainian language.

World Youth Day was founded in 1985 by Pope John Paul II.
