In high spirits, Ukraine's Paralympic team heads to Rio 2016

The biggest team in Ukraine's history is departing to the Paralympic Games on August 30

A record number of athletes in the history of the Ukrainian Paralympic team – 172 participants – is leaving to Rio for the Paralympic Games 2016 on Tuesday. The official ceremony of seeing off Ukrainian sportspersons took place in Maidan, the central square of Kyiv, on August 27.

Kyiv residents and Ukrainians from all over the country came to Maidan to encourage and cheer up the Ukrainian Paralympic team. Soldiers, who have fought in eastern Ukraine, visited the ceremony as well.

"Of course, I wish victory for our athletes at the upcoming Paralympic games. New achievements, records hitting and victory again".

"Ukrainian athletes are brave. Good luck to you. Fortune favors the brave. Excellent results at finishes. I wish our athletes to outdo their London results of 2012".

The Paralympic games are to start on September 7. Ukraine's team will take part in 15 out of 22 types of sports. Initially, only 155 athletes planned to go to Rio. However, the Court of Arbitration for Sport approved the decision of the International Paralympic committee regarding the withdrawal of the Russian team because of the doping scandal. As a result, 267 slots that had been secured by Russian athletes were redistributed among other countries.

Valeriy Sushkevych, Head of the National Sports Committee for the Disabled of Ukraine, told UT about the difficulties of the Ukraine's team before the games start. As he said, they are financing issues and unaccessible training venue in the city of Yevpatoriya, which cannot be used because of the annexation of Crimea.
