Rio 2016 Olympics get underway with women's football

Games officially start with the opening ceremony on Friday, August 5

Rio 2016 Olympic Games sporting action kicked off on August 3 with the women's football tournament.

The game between Sweden and South Africa teams started two days before the opening ceremony of the Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

Other five matches between women teams will take place later in the day.

The men's tournament gets underway on Thursday with eight group games in Rio, Brasilia, Manaus and Salvador.

On August 5, just before the official opening ceremony, the ranking rounds of Olympics archery competition will take place.

The opening ceremony will be held in Rio's Maracana Stadium on August 5 at 8pm local time.

The Games officially take place between 5 and 21 August

Competitions will take place across 32 venues in Rio de Janeiro, with football matches also scheduled for the cities of Belo Horizonte, Brasilia, Manaus, Salvador and Sao Paulo.
