Ukrainian athletes dominated today in Estonian Otepaa
Ukrainian athlete Olena Pidhrushna has won the Gold medal in the women's senior sprint at the Summer Biathlon World Championship in Estonian Otepaa.
Pidhrushna had had a single penalty during the race, which she finished in 22 minutes and 18.5 seconds.
"We did not have a camp here and came just before the championships. So this wind was completely new for us and I spent a lot of time at the zeroing today because it always changed. When I came to the first stage, the gust was really hard, I was trying to adjust to it and made my first shot around 27 second and it is very long for me," she said.
South Korea's Anna Frolina was 10 seconds slower and had two penalties, resulting in the second place and the Silver medal.
Another Ukrainian athlete, Iryna Varvynets came in third, 26 seconds later then her teammate Pidhrushna.
Ukraine was also victorious in the women's junior sprint today, with 21-year-old Anastasiya Merkushyna winning another Gold medal for her country. She had a tense contest with Polish Kinga Mitorai, who was 2.5 seconds slower.
‘I did not hope for that win, but tried to do my best. It was a really strong wind today, but it blew from the same side, with the same power, so it was possible to shoot', Merkushyna said.
Ukrainian Anton Myhda also won the male's junior sprint Gold.
