Ukrainian Olympic champions in canoeing arrive home (video)

Fans meet athletes with flowers, national flags, and live orchestra

Ukrainian canoeists finally arrive at Kyiv Boryspil International airport. In Rio-de-Janeiro the athletes won a gold medal in men's single sprint and a bronze in men's canoe double. Numerous fans with flowers and national flags have come to greet the champions.

Taras Mischuk and Dmytro Yanchuk are the first to come out to the people. They both got a bronze award in men's canoe double. They lacked just 2 seconds to get a silver medal.

Olympic champion in canoe single Yuriy Cheban is carried out by his friends, accompanied by military march. Having won the golden award, Cheban also hit a new Olympic record. He is the first to row 200 metres in 39 seconds.

Yuriy Cheban, Olympic champion: I was eager to go home. After three weeks of training and competing I am totally worn out. It is not only physical tension, it is moral pressure as well.

His mother is eager to show the previous awards of her son.

Liudmyla Cheban, mother of Yuriy Cheban: Here is 2012 when Yuriy won the golden medal in London. And here is 2016, he becomes a champion again. This flag has been to two Olympics already.

Ukrainian women return home without any awards. The athletes lacked 0,2 seconds to become the third in the final competition. They claim it is not only their fault but also a great drawback of Ukraine's Ministry of Sport.
