Kyiv public are the first to see the new Antonov multipurpose plane in production configuration
State Aviation Museum in Kyiv opened the annual airshow Ukraine Avia Fest. Ukraine Today's correspondent visited the event.
The first production military transport An-178, which will soon be sent to the customer, was presented during the opening of the air show. The air show will last until September 18. From classic to cutting-edge - more than 100 airplanes and helicopters exhibited at the three-day festival. You can have a look on them in UT's photogallery from the showcase.
The An-178 itself is a short-range medium-airlift military transport aircraft designed by the Ukrainian Antonov company and based on its previous successful model An-158 (An-148-200). It was announced on 5 February 2010, rolled out on 16 April 2015 and made the first flight was on 7 May 2015.
The An-178 is reportedly replacing the outdated aircraft like the Antonov An-12, Antonov An-26 and Antonov An-32. Also it is a competitor for the Alenia C-27J Spartan from Italy, EADS CASA C-295 from Spain, Lockheed Martin C-130J from the United States, Embraer KC-390 from Brazil and the Ilyushin Il-214 from the Russian Federation. The company plans to build more than 200 of aircraft.
On 18 December 2015, Antonov and Тaqnia Aeronautics signed a Memorandum to deliver 30 An−178s to the Royal Saudi Air Force. Azerbaijan intends to buy 10 more planes. Also planned to be used in Ukrainian Armed forces. As UT informed, Antonov launched batch production of An-178 aircraft this summer.
